Next generation wi-fi enhances passenger experience and operational applications on inter-city trains.
Today’s rail users expect much more than a seat when they travel, especially on long journeys. Passengers want a reliable data connection from the moment they board so they can work, watch and browse while in transit. Modern trains also require constant and stable data transmission for operational applications such as passenger information systems, seat reservations and point of sales terminals. HUBER+SUHNER is known for providing market-leading connectivity solutions for the rail industry. So when Germany’s national rail operator Deutsche Bahn decided to invest in next generation connectivity for its entire intercity fleet, we used our experience to implement a system attuned to the very specific demands of high-speed and long-distance rail travel.
Mobile connectivity systems for rail must address challenges that include availability, bandwidth, transmission speed, latency, and stability, all while travelling at high speed through a landscape of tunnels, mountains, valleys, and open ground. These systems have to connect with multiple network operators simultaneously and support data-heavy services such as voice and video telephony, live streaming, downloads and storage. Our solution combines HUBER+SUHNER hardware components such as rooftop antennas, in-carriage access points and industrial gateways with software that allows data aggregation and load balancing. The software is developed by our partner McLaren Applied (UK), whose specialisation in high-speed mobile communication is rooted in its Formula 1 heritage. Two sub-systems maintain constant train-to-ground communication while delivering uninterrupted wi-fi for passengers.
Rail is at the forefront of environmentally-friendly mobility. We have created a solution that contributes to Deutsche Bahn’s green transformation while demonstrating that innovation and sustainability can work hand in hand. Our system is being retrofitted to Deutsche Bahn’s existing long-distance fleet as well as brand new trains, which will extend the lifespan of this rolling stock. A standardised system architecture allows components to be changed in and out without affecting overall performance, adding to the longevity of this solution. Rail communications is a driver of growth for HUBER+SUHNER within the transportation market. The expected sales volume from this project is in the middle double-digit million range (CHF). This contract with a leading name like Deutsche Bahn illustrates the strong brand we are building within rail.
“Driven by our strategic initiative within rail communications, our success with Deutsche Bahn’s “WIFIonICE’" project underscores our commitment to innovation and connectivity, setting new standards for excellence and customer satisfaction.”
